How do you see yourself?

Don't sound old before your time


Be honest now. How many times in the last week have you justified a momentary lapse of concentration or memory loss by saying ‘ I’m having a senior moment’, or ‘It’s my age’? How often did you preface any sentence with the words, ‘At my/our time of life…’?  or even worse, ‘In my day…’? How frequently did you use the killer phrase ‘I remember when…’? or justify some failing by saying ‘It was different when I was young’?

If your answer was ‘quite often’ then you’re not alone. If you listen to most over 50s you’ll hear them using these and many similar phrases regularly, often in a very self-deprecating way. Okay, usually the intention is to make light of our failings and idiosyncrasies which can be very entertaining and amusing,  but underneath there is a more sinister force at work. Through speaking and presenting ourselves to the world in this way we are reinforcing those ageist stereotypes that we otherwise fight so hard against. By talking ‘old’ we’re making ourselves ‘old’. 

It’s as if we are using our mode of speech as a defence mechanism. By saying, in effect, ‘I recognise that I am ageing and I am not as capable as I once was,’ we avoid the danger of being laughed at, pitied or ridiculed. As a common response to a threatening situation this would appear reasonable if it wasn’t for the fact that if we believe that we are essentially vibrant, capable, energetic and powerful people then there’s nothing that we need to justify in this way. Planning Retirement in a Modern Environment

Retirement planning (often known as pre-retirement counselling) in organisations is nothing new - but the nature of retirement itself is changing fast!

People are living longer and the traditional time horizon set aside for ‘retirement’ is extending rapidly. Retirement no longer consists of a few twilight years but now represents a significant part of a person’s life. So significant, in fact, that it is not just one time period at all, but two. First there are the transition years, and only then, the years of growing old gracefully.

Accordingly, individuals need sufficient financial resources to sustain themselves, they need to be in good physical and mental health, they need interests and they need to be leading useful, meaningful, productive lives.

And the nation as a whole needs them to be active and productive. The state cannot by itself entirely fund pensions, health and care needs. Industry cannot afford to foot the whole bill for the pensions necessary, as we are seeing. And the economy is short of the skills and experience that older people have carefully honed over many years.

Therefore, we need a new way of thinking about retirement, a way that plans for this phase of our lives many, many years in advance. A way that does not see retirement as a ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ gold watch occasion. A way that acknowledges that one size does not fit all. A way that individuals and employers can together develop a flexible approach to retirement and an attitude that is good for both employers and employees.

Why "in my prime" has a role to play

Anyone over 50 reading newspapers or watching TV might be forgiven for believing sometimes that they are living in a parallel universe to everyone else. While some are forever going on holiday, others are expecting to have to work till they drop. While some are totally unfamiliar with the internet, others seem to spend all day glued to their computer screens. And while many are unwell or infirm, others are bungee jumping and white water rafting.

The reason is quite simple. Only slowly, in this youth-obsessed world, are people beginning to realise that the years from 50 onwards are likely to be very substantial and that there a lot of us in that arena. We’re not just one homogeneous mass. Read on>>
