How do you see yourself?

Mature?  Active?  Around fifty?  Over 50?  Senior?  A baby boomer?  Planning retirement?  Retired?  Absolutely no thoughts of retiring?

Do you want to make some changes?

If so, and if you're over 50, then in my prime is for you.

We’re the leading organisation for mature, positive, energetic people who want to achieve more – at a time in their lives when others might be thinking of easing off, slowing down or planning for retirement.

Perhaps you’re drawing to the end of a long career, one of the "older workers"? Perhaps changes in family or domestic circumstances call for some fundamental re-appraisal of the direction of your life? Perhaps your needs are financial, you just can’t afford to stop? Or maybe you’re just bored or frustrated and know that there must be more to life than this?

in my prime is all about helping and supporting you to:

  • find appropriate ways to maximise your potential in every area of your life
  • develop new interests whether work or leisure
  • dispel all doubts (if you have any) - being over 50 is nothing to do with being old

The elephant in the room

By 2031, less than 25 years away, over one-third of the UK population will be over 55, while 22% will be over 65. There are two major implications of this.

Firstly, the working lives of individuals will have to extend beyond 65 to ensure that there are enough in the workforce to fill the nation’s needs.

Secondly, the notion that retirement is a few twilight years after a lifetime of slog is no longer relevant.

Looking at life expectancy in more detail, in short people are living ever longer. Taking into account improving mortality rates men of 65 now can expect to live until they are 86 and women to 88. And the trend of greater and greater life expectancy will continue for the foreseeable future. Current 40 year-olds who make it to 65 can expect to live into their nineties or very close to.

Planning Retirement in a Modern Environment

Retirement planning (often known as pre-retirement counselling) in organisations is nothing new - but the nature of retirement itself is changing fast! And with these changes come challenges, both for employers and individuals themselves.

People are living longer and the traditional time horizon set aside for ‘retirement’ is extending rapidly. Retirement no longer consists of a few twilight years but now represents a significant part of a person’s life. So significant, in fact, that it is not just one time period at all, but two. First there are the transition years, and only then, the years of growing old gracefully.

Accordingly, individuals need sufficient financial resources to sustain themselves, they need to be in good physical and mental health, they need interests and they need to be leading useful, meaningful, productive lives.

And the nation as a whole needs them to be active and productive. The state cannot by itself entirely fund pensions, health and care needs. Industry cannot afford to foot the whole bill for the pensions necessary, as we are seeing. And the economy is short of the skills and experience that older people have carefully honed over many years.

Therefore, we need a new way of thinking about retirement, a way that plans for this phase of our lives many, many years in advance. A way that does not see retirement as a ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ gold watch occasion. A way that acknowledges that one size does not fit all. A way that individuals and employers can together develop a flexible approach to retirement and an attitude that is good for both employers and employees.

If you're an employer or HR specialist with an interest in maximising the benefits of older workers while also being seen as a good employer, please contact us for details of the services we provide.
